Job Summary

This position reports to the Vice President and General Counsel of Hillsdale College. It requires a firm grasp of various aspects of the law that are significant to a campus environment and provides legal advice and guidance to the College while staying aligned with its mission and purpose.

Essential Job Duties

1. The work includes but is not limited to contract review, regulatory compliance, assisting with the development of policy and procedures, employment law, litigation support, and business and taxation law.
2. Take part in internal and external meetings and discussions as the General Counsel determines necessary and appropriate; otherwise, be a vital member of the Office of the General Counsel at Hillsdale College.
3. Provide strong legal knowledge and the ability to support various aspects of the Colleges strategic needs.
4. Serve as a representative of the College in various roles, including one-on-one with donors, outside agencies, and law firms.
5. Occasional road and air travel are requirements for this position.

Required Qualifications:

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty mentioned satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and Experience

A four-year college degree and Juris Doctorate degree from a fully accredited top law school are required for consideration for this position. Work experience of at least 3-5 years in a successful practice and litigation experience is a plus.

The individual must hold a license to practice law in a relevant jurisdiction of the College, have superior oral and written communication skills, and must possess a creative problem-solving and solution-oriented mindset.

Physical Requirements

Must possess the ability to engage in regular travel, analyze complex legal issues and scenarios, and provide effective counsel to internal management. The individual must be able to meet telephonically, by Zoom or other video conferencing methods, and in person on a frequent basis.
