Job Description

Position Title: Men's Staff Chaplain

Department: Administration

Reports to: Chief People Officer

Direct Reports: None

FLSA Status: Part-time / Non-Exempt

Applicant Requirements: We request that you submit BOTH a Cover Letter AND a Resume that demonstrates your interest and qualifications for working in a Ministry Position AND the Chaplain role. You will not be considered without both of these. Please complete the application form in its entirety as we are unable to extend an offer of employment for incomplete applications. Some volunteering with the ministry as part of the assessment and qualification process may be requested.

The Ministry: OurCalling is a ministry specifically focused on the unsheltered homeless community. We operate an outreach center for the homeless community near downtown Dallas. We are passionate about loving and helping the unsheltered homeless transition to better lives. We are a faith-based ministry where every job is a ministry position. Each staff member should be able to clearly share the Gospel and communicate their own testimony. While everyone on the team wears multiple hats, our primary function is getting people off the street and helping them walk with Jesus. We want everything that we do to point to Jesus. We serve 200-400 guests daily. We are a “no-barrier” facility that is welcoming and compassionate to all who enter.

Chaplain Role:

  • Work with staff individually to provide spiritual guidance, encouragement, and perspective.
  • Reinforce the spiritual growth of each staff person.
  • As much as possible, identify the core struggle of each staff member and support each one with regular prayer, and when requested, processing personal issues together.
  • Assist staff to prevent or overcome secondary trauma and compassion fatigue to retain purpose and fulfillment of their role in OC.
  • Anticipate conflicts within the "body of Christ" and help guide to resolution of harmony and accord (i.e. conflict resolution skills required)
  • Where dissatisfaction emerges, process and guide through a mature, biblical way to handle it.
  • Become attuned to how each staff member processes "trauma" and reinforce healthy ways to deal with stressors.
  • Renew hope, perseverance, and identity in the body of Christ (i.e. spiritual gifts), etc.
  • Provide a safe place where staff can talk through appropriate reactions to situations that might occur at work, at home, and/or in personal relationships.
  • Help staff to view day-to-day situations from a spiritual perspective.
  • Encourage the discouraged, orient the mis-focused, and help staff prevent becoming isolated and detached.
  • Hospital or home visits when staff become ill.
  • Assist leading staff monthly process group.

Skill Set Required:

  • Able to listen for what is being expressed, and also for the deeper issues that might be driving the narrative.
  • Able to listen for hints about how an individual might need encouragement.
  • Able to listen for insights into how an individual might be vulnerable to burnout
  • Able to identify the connection between personal/early-life story and persistent difficulties in functioning at OC.
  • Able to relate personal issues of struggle with scriptural principles of encouragement.
  • Ability to learn triggers that result in unproductive reactions to difficult situations and avoidance of opportunities.
  • Knowledge of stress management techniques and self care.
  • Able to assist staff in recovery from setbacks, grieving, and discouragement.
  • Ability to help guide each staff person through trauma-induced pain as they can become creative and proactive beyond compassion fatigue.
  • Ability to assist in conflict resolution - before it develops outwardly and after it has manifested openly.
  • Strong prayer life - praying consistently for staff and with staff.
  • Know when to refer staff members to more intensive counseling/therapy outside of OurCalling.
  • Able to make at minimum 2 year commitment to serving in this role

Experience/Background:

  • Master's Degree in Counseling or Chaplaincy, or equivalent
  • Minimum 10 years counseling or chaplain experience required
  • Trauma informed care experience is a must
  • Retired or semi-retired counselor would be an ideal candidate

Additional Qualifications:

  • Upholding a close and growing relationship as a disciple of Jesus Christ
