Position Summary

As a Senior Learning Experience Designer, you will lead teams of other designers and course producers to design and develop high-quality online learning experiences for educational programs at Duke. In collaboration with administrative and faculty leaders, you will create online courses and programs, develop learning design processes and workflows, consult on instructional design, and collaborate on innovative uses of education technology in higher education.

Responsibilities

Consulting and Design (40%)

Consult and collaborate at the department, program, or school-level on the design of online curricula, credential or degree programs, or portfolios of online course offerings,
including effective use of technologies and apps for learning. In addition, consult with individual instructors on their online learning design needs.

Lead teams to identify design and technology specifications or standards that guide the Design of course demo modules. Also, design demo modules or templates that will be used across courses within an online program or portfolio of online courses.

Design demo versions of online learning activities that help learners apply what they are learning and achieve learning goals, such as interactive lessons, learning assessments, practice or reflective exercises, engagement with peers or the instructor, or other activities based on specified requirements, pedagogical best practices, effective use of technologies for learning, and user-friendly design.

Project and Team Management (40%)

  • Manage high-level decision-making within projects: build consensus on learning design and technology decisions and team members ' expertise; facilitate and adjust course
  • development workflows; maintain project timelines; delegate work on project teams; provide project status updates to key stakeholders at Duke or external partners.
  • Create and manage processes for course site-building and media production, including quality assurance for professional design, organization, accessibility, and user-friendliness. Assist with course building, as needed.
  • Create and manage processes for user testing learning experiences, collecting feedback, and providing concise, prioritized, and actionable recommendations.
  • Lead team efforts to monitor course pilots and resolve issues that arise, and advise schools and academic units on how to create ongoing course support resources and
  • services for online programs after the initial pilot.

Program Portfolio Management (10%)

  • Co-manage the project portfolio with the Assistant Director for Learning Experience Design (LXD) to determine LXD team assignments across projects and projects' scope of work, timelines, and milestone schedules. Provide recommendations for how to navigate tradeoffs between design work and a project's time constraints.

Faculty Development and Other Duties (10%)

  • Lead team to create and facilitate training opportunities, in different formats, that help faculty develop skills in online course design, online teaching, and using technologies for learning.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education

Required: A bachelor's degree with additional experience sufficient to effectively design, build, test, and implement online education offerings.
Preferred: A bachelor's or master's degree in instructional design, education, learning sciences, education technology, or information science.

Experience

Required: Three to six years' work experience in either education, instructional design, user experience design, online education, education technology, learning sciences, or a related field. Have excellent communication and customer service skills. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and help clients achieve their goals. Detail-oriented, highly organized, and capable of taking initiative in projects with minimal oversight.
Preferred: At least five years of relevant work experience. Specialized experience would be extensive work in designing learning experiences for professional education programs, ideally online or hybrid. Using design thinking in developing products or solutions; working knowledge of online course platforms or learning management systems; demonstrated initiative in identifying and solving challenges and improving current work processes.

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid work schedule (i.e., primarily working from home, with both the option to have in-office work days as well as the need to attend certain meetings on campus)
  • Occasional travel required
  • Occasional evening or weekend work as needed for time-sensitive deliverables
