Job Description

Ouray Grocery is a rapidly growing, family-owned independent grocery store located in Ouray, CO. Ouray was recently voted as the #1 place to visit in the US by Men's Journal (2024) and is an amazing place to call home. As our company continues to grow with the coming addition of a retail liquor store adjacent to our grocery store, we are looking for a qualified and experience manager to oversee all operations at both locations. The ideal candidate will have experience across all departments with an emphasis on fresh meat and produce. Previous experience with liquor is strongly valued. Our store is ideal for a manager that values autonomy and the ability to make decisions and operate with a sense of ownership. In addition, we are looking for someone with a strong background in personnel management who can balance the challenges of a diverse, hourly workforce.

This position will be split between on-premises and remote management of both the grocery and liquor locations. The successful candidate can expect to spend 80% of their time running the grocery store and 20% of their time on the liquor store. This role will be supported by a salaried assistant manager whose primary role will be 80% focused on the liquor store and 20% on grocery.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum 10yrs grocery experience; 5yrs grocery management.
  • Demonstrated understanding of grocery store operations and management. Experience in the independent grocery market is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret budgets, departmental margins and labor spend as it pertains to store profitability.
  • Demonstrated understanding of pricing, margin and scan management.
  • Minimum 5yrs of personnel management.
  • Experience managing multiple departments. Experience in produce, meat cutting, and prepared foods is a plus.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, and long shifts as required is mandatory.
  • Understanding of liquor laws and regulations in Colorado.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and able to continuously handle heavy (40lb+) cases.
  • Experience with conflict resolution, disciplinary action, policy compliance and employee accountability.
  • Ability to work autonomously and with high-level guidance.
  • Proven ability to take initiative and ownership in solving store problems.
  • Prior forklift experience is a plus

ROLE REPSONSIBILITIES – GROCERY

  • Manage daily store operations in tandem with the assistant store manager and ensure impeccable customer service.
  • Ordering; distributor, DSD, specialty, and local sources
  • Provide guidance and oversight to all departments
  • Manage daily deposit and change needs for the store
  • Evaluate, plan and complete seasonal pre-commit ordering with the assistance of the store owner.
  • Hands-on coverage of all departments and roles as necessary
  • Personnel management including scheduling, training, onboarding, discipline, recruiting and other tasks as needed.
  • Weekly ad and loyalty program management
  • Manage store pricing and tags weekly or as necessary
  • Seasonal merchandising and store resets as required
  • Maintain store cleanliness and customer service standards
  • Manage store backstock and shrink
  • Employee development and talent management

ROLE REPSONSIBILITIES – LIQUOR

  • Support daily store operations in tandem with the assistant store manager and ensure impeccable customer service.
  • Supervise/oversee ordering; provide order coverage as necessary
  • Provide operational guidance and oversight to assistant store manager
  • Monitor/track daily deposits
  • Evaluate, plan and complete seasonal pre-commit ordering with the assistance of the store owner and assistant manager.
  • Hands-on coverage of all departments and roles as necessary
  • Personnel management including scheduling, training, onboarding, discipline, recruiting and other tasks as needed.
  • Weekly ad and loyalty program management
  • Support assistant store manager with pricing updates and tags as necessary
  • Support assistant store manager with and store resets as required
  • Ensure store cleanliness and customer service standards
  • Monitor store backstock and shrink
  • Ensure compliance with all state and federal laws regarding liquor, tobacco and other restricted items such as vapes and CBD products.

COMPENSATION

  • Yearly Salary: Salaried/Exempt, $90,000-$105,000 DOE
  • Yearly Performance Bonus: 10% of base salary + (3) “all or nothing” stretch target bonuses
  • PTO: 80hrs, eligible for 120hrs after 1 year
  • Sick Leave: 48hrs/year
